Papers of the Withrow family [manuscript], 1870-1926.

The papers consist chiefly of letters to Waynesboro merchant William Withrow, Jr., and Mary Anne Jones Withrow from children, relatives, acquaintances and fellow members of the Waynesboro Presbyterian Church. Of special interest are the letters of Evelyn Withrow Houston and Matthew Hale Houston, Presbyterian missionaries to Hangchow, China, 1871-1882. There are also letters concerning the Presbyterian Mission Board in Baltimore, and letters from missionaries in China and Korea. Letters from children Louise Jane and Charles Howard Withrow discuss their work as teachers particularly Charles's positions as superintendent of the Danville, Ky., classical and military academy and principal of the Academy of Richmond County, Augusta, Ga. Other topics include an 1889 European trip, the Keeley Institute, Ashland, Va., W.H. Ruffner, genealogy, World War I and the development of the McCormick reaper. In addition the collection contains a copy of the will of Elvira A. Brooks and a printed defense of John W. Pratt's position concerning the Centre College of Kentucky.
